So I'm not going to hide the fact I was a very happy plus one for the premiere of this film.
I had seen a few scenes here and there but never thought it would've turned out as awesome as it did.
The dynamic between these two can be put on the same level field as Sherlock and Watson, Laurel and Hardy and one of my college favorite pairs, Pinky and the Brain.
The premise is great. Seeing LA in a sea of fog, cigarette smoke and wide legged pants the year I was born made me chuckle at the thought of explaining to someone back then how in the future it's all about Prius (or is it Prii) and clean living.
The dialogue was spot on and witty as expected from Shane Black but the surprise here was Ryan Gosling who gets an A for his slapstick chops.
More predictably but still very enjoyable was Russell Crowe's pan face at Ryan's behavior as a drinking and horny freeloader. Kudos to whomever thought of pairing these two.
The story revolves around a missing girl (or a dead girl) who turns out to maybe also be a porn star (or not).
The plot doesn't matter as much as the characters we meet here.
The bad guys are straight out of a classic bond film. I also enjoyed the Kim Basinger scenes even if there were so few (I may eve have to revisit LA confidential after seeing this film). The porn "people" are dumb and hilarious (we even got a glimpse of a young dirk diggler) and Ryan's daughter played by Angourie Rice is a take on a cooler than ever Nancy Drew.
A great time at the movies. Definitely a must see.
Finally the music:
Too biased to comment perhaps....loved they kept to a bit oft he style from back then. Beautiful trumpet solo and great funky beats accompany the picture well. They certainly didn't hold back on the song choices too which are superb.
